The Sussex hosts dominated the first half and after Gary Julians (15) and Frank Ovard (20) had gone close, they took the lead in the 21st minute when Grant Gallagher made the initial break down the left and his cross towards Julians was cut out by Ducks captain Peter Hutter who looked to be in control until Julians made his presence felt. Hutter went down, and fell on the ball, a penalty for handball was the verdict of the referee and David Myers sent Ducks keeper Tim Garner the wrong way.
Cliff Hercules threatened briefly at the other end with a crashing volley that was well turned away by Town keeper Gary Moseley in the 25th minute before the hosts doubled their lead in the 28th minute when Ovard ran down the left before crossing for Cliff Cant to send a perfect volley from the edge of the box in off the underside of the bar.
United came out for the second half as though they meant business with the advantage of kicking down the slope to come.
In the 61st minute both sides were reduced to 10 men when United?s Paul Hackett and Town?s Trevor Timms were sent off for fighting after clashing in midfield, the 7th time a Ducks player had been dismissed so far that season.
Town went close to making it 3-0 when Ovard slipped past Paul Saunders? challenge of the half way line and squared for Myers but Garner pulled off a breathtaking save to keep his side in with a shout.
Then at the other end in the 81st minute Cliff Campbell twice went close before United pulled one back when sub Albert Altenor fed Gary Harthill wide on the right who shot over Moseley to offer hopes of a miracle.
However, none was forthcoming and Trevor Gould?s side returned home empty handed.
