After suffering their second straight defeat with a 0-3 FA Trophy 3rd Qualifying Round loss away to Beazer Homes League Premier Division side Worcester City on the Saturday, The Ducks made it three defeats in a row as they crashed out of the Ryman League Full Members Cup to third from bottom Premier Division side Purfleet in what proved to be a disappointing end to Cliff Hercules' first spell as a Ducks player.

It was a dour and uneventful encounter in which neither keeper was seriously tested and what proved to be the only goal came in stoppage time at the end when United sub Dave Benstead pushed over Lee Matthews in the box and Paul Cobb sent Ducks keeper Gary Phillips the wrong way from the resulting penalty.
