The match got off to a relatively open start. Lewis Pritchard got up to head an early free-kick, but the ball skimmed off his head and down to Scott Tarr. Kevin Davies made a spectacular early stop, although the linesman had flagged for offside anyway.
As early as the seventh minute Craig McAllister signalled his intent, cutting inside and hitting a fierce shot towards the top corner. The shot was only matched by Davies' excellent tip wide.
McAllister then had another effort, this time from 25-yards, which was easily held by Davies. The striker then missed his easiest chance of the night. Good play by Neville Roach saw John Winter beaten, and his shot was parried by Davies into the path of McAllister, who inexplicably shot wide from 5-yards.
Aylesbury nearly scored themselves, following some lovely work between the front two. Pritchard flicked the ball on for the advancing Gray, who beat Tarr to the ball and lobbed the stricken keeper. A Basingstoke defender somehow managed to reach the ball before it crossed the line, and prevented the goal.
Rory Hunter of all people then fancied his chances from distance, as he broke forward from midfield and curled a left-footed shot. Sadly, it was well over the bar.
Roach then shot wide after a good, powerful run, and Oliver Burgess head wide a dangerous McAllister cross. The same player then hit a fierce volley, which went just wide. Basingstoke had one further chance before the break, as Roach broke forward, but instead of playing the killer through ball, tried to go it alone and shot wide.
Half-time: Basingstoke 0-0 Aylesbury
The second half wasn't as lively as the first, with Aylesbury visibly tiring as the game wore on. In fact, the match was devoid of any more chances until the home side took the lead.
Roach took advantage of some slow reactions from the Aylesbury defence to steal in, run at goal and finish coolly past Davies. 1-0 Basingstoke
The goal was very disappointing from Aylesbury's point of view, as the defence had looked solid up until that point, and the Ducks appeared capable of earning at least a draw. United suffered another blow three minutes later though, as Pritchard was forced off, to be replaced by Aidie Corcoran, which left Gareth Risbridger and Danny Gray as the striking partnership.
The partnership was to prove ineffective, and it was Basingstoke who had the remainder of the posession, and the chances. Davies made another good save, after Burgess wriggled his way through the box, before firing the ball in low.
The game was given extra Basingstoke shine in injury time, as they scored a rather harsh (from a Ducks perspective) second goal. A great through ball from McAllister found Burgess perfectly placed to easily finish. 2-0 Basingstoke
And that, quite literally, was that, as the referee blew the final whistle straight from the restart. Aylesbury will quite rightly feel hard done by with the 2-0 scoreline, after they matched the home side for more than 65-minutes.
