A lack of goalscoring prowess, coupled with an abject opening 25-minutes by the Ducks, cost them 3 points against mid-table Rugby Town.

The match could hardly have started worse for United, as their opponents took the lead after just two minutes. The ever dangerous Robbie Beard snuck in behind Aylesbury's defence and lobbed Reece Kirk with aplomb. 1-0 Rugby

Aylesbury struggled to make any kind of impression on what turned out to be a fairly poor game, with the next chance falling to Rugby twenty minutes later, when Delroy Gordon curled an effort goalwards, parried away by Kirk.

Then, just past the half-hour mark, United got the spark they needed, when Mark Bridge hit a shot goalwards which was held by Farhad Afidiyev.

Moments later, out of almost nothing, the Ducks had an unexpected equaliser. Richard Pringle collected posession on the right flank, and fed the ball to Leon Gutzmore in the area, who kept his composure to slot the ball under Afindiyev. 1-1

The goal visibly lifted the home team, but all they had to show for the efforts before the break was a misguided header from Rob Gould at a corner.

Half-time: Aylesbury 1-1 Rugby

Aylesbury continued their dominance into the second period, Gould again going close, this time with a shot after a corner kick was headed on, forcing a good save from Afindiyev.

But for all their endeavour, United were lacking a creative influence, and chances were hard to come by.

Instead, Rugby still posed a threat themselves, and ex-Duck Jamie Kearns saw a low shot held by Kirk, before the former Watford goalkeeper made a fine reflex save to deny David Stone from close range.

Matt Hayward went close to netting when he stole in on the end of Pringle's flick-on, but his effort trickled wide of the far post.

Further efforts came though Leon Gordon, who hit a snap-shot that zipped wide of the right hand upright, and Leon Gutzmore who shot wide from outside the area, but Aylesbury were unable to snatch a decisive second goal.

Come the season's end the Ducks may well look upon this result as two points dropped, as they came up against an uninspiring Rugby Town team. As it is, the long wait for a win goes on.
