Aylesbury United spectacularly returned to form with a 6-0 thrashing of struggling Hanwell Town at Bell Close.

The majority of the game was actually a lot closer than the scoreline suggested, the visitors hitting the woodwork three times in the first half, before a blitzing last twenty minutes saw the Ducks net four times to record such a healthy margin.

There were some early scares for Aylesbury and Jayden Spence should have scored after just two minutes when John Mulholland was unable to cut out a forward pass allowing Spence a free run at goal, but he scuffed his effort wide. Silvestri then nearly turned the ball into his own net two minutes later.

A couple of chances at the other end then came and went, with Field picking out Ben Baines in the box whose diving header was blocked behind by a defender at the end of a fine counter attacking move.

Hanwell hit the woodwork for the second time through Blaise O’Brien – top scorer in the league last season. Mulholland again was unable to cut out a through ball and O’Brien ran through and was unfortunate to see his effort cannon back off the crossbar. Only moments earlier a header from Eddie Clements had struck the outside of the post.

It was important for Aylesbury that they got the confidence-boosting first goal, and, having survived Hanwell’s near misses, it duly arrived after 18 minutes. Baines’ usual persistence on the byline paid dividends as he was able to squeeze the ball across for Field who had the easy task of turning it in from practically on the goal-line. 1-0 Aylesbury

Town responded and almost immediately they struck goal frame again. Mulholland was having a shaky start to the match, and his uncharacteristic poor touch let Spence get away again, his shot coming back off the inside of the far post before being hacked away.

From then until the interval, it was Aylesbury who had the better chances, and only a brilliant save from Bruce Callen denied Field on the volley after Silvestri’s cross set him up, and Field again had a good chance but lobbed over when one-on-one after Baines and then Acheampong had headed the ball on.

Hanwell did have a couple of attempts before the first half was up, though nothing clear cut. O’Brien went for a selfish effort that flew wide of the goal, suggesting the frustrations of a man who had scored exactly twice as many goals (14 to 7) at the same stage of last season.

The reinstated Daniel Jones then put in a good defensive block to deny Baverstock, before Baines had a shot, all of his own work, saved in stoppage time by Callen.

Half-time: Aylesbury 1-0 Hanwell

United started the second half strongly and had a number of chances to increase their scoring, as another terrorising run from Acheampong ended with his cross having to be tipped over by Callen, and two minutes later Baines’ acrobatic attempt also had to be tipped over. It was a fine, raking free-kick from Mercer which had set Jones away in the build up, his cross headed back to Baines by Field.

The resulting corner lead to Aylesbury’s second goal. The ball was only cleared as far as Garcia and as the visitors stood and watched he picked out Silvestri’s run into the box, and he cleverly dinked the ball past Callen. 2-0 Aylesbury

It was pretty much one-way traffic for the remainder of the match, the second goal having killed the match as a contest.

Baines saw a cross deflected onto the roof of the net, and Silvestri headed a corner kick over the bar, before a clear turning point in the game when Hanwell made the tactical switch to a 3-man defence with a double substitution.

Clearly it was a ploy to try and get back into the game, but it backfired in spectacular style and what had been Aylesbury control now turned into rampant Aylesbury dominance.

Garcia, otherwise excellent once again, skied a simple looking finish from 6-yards after Baines’ hard work had seen him pull the ball back for his team mate.

A rare Hanwell shot at goal – one of two in the second half – saw O’Brien’s effort deflected wide for a corner after the Ducks had failed to clear their lines, and Clements scuffed a shot which Timberlake – deputising for the injured Sillitoe – was able to easily claim.

In truth, the veteran keeper had little action to deal with and Aylesbury were soon back at the other end, and Baines claimed a well deserved goal eleven minutes from time when he turned in from close range. Barnett had set Acheampong away yet again down the right with a fabulous cross-field pass, and his low ball was bread and butter for Baines. 3-0 Aylesbury

3-0 would have been satisfactory, but the Ducks management sensed more goals and introduced further attacking options in Edgeworth, Simpson and Dimitrov.

Within a minute of entering the fray, it was the latter who scored with his first touch. Acheampong, unplayable when in form like this, set up another goal by laying the ball into him, Dimitrov’s quick feet and shot bamboozling the defence and goalkeeper. 4-0 Aylesbury

Acheampong, Silvestri and Simpson all had further chances, but it was Dimitrov again on the mark three minutes later. This time it was Edgeworth with the assist, rounding off a flowing attack, Dimitrov once more proving clinical in front of goal. 5-0 Aylesbury

Joey Acheampong’s superb right-wing display fully merited a goal to his name, and he got one in stoppage time. Beleagured Hanwell were unable to clear their lines at a corner kick and Acheampong was there to poke home. 6-0 Aylesbury

It was virtually the last kick of the game as Aylesbury left the field to enjoy their biggest win of the season, and their second six-goal haul of the campaign.
