Stacey Field’s fabulous solo goal – another to add to his growing collection – proved decisive as Aylesbury edged to their six straight win by seeing off Oxhey Jets 1-0 at Bell Close.

The unavailability of Joey Acheampong brought an end to his partnership with Field for the first time since the first match of the year, during which time the two have netted 17 goals between them.

As a result, United struggled in attack, and for the first 25 minutes created very little, until Field’s goal came out of the blue.

With just six minutes played the visitors hit the post when a corner kick was poorly defended by Aylesbury, allowing full-back Orlando Rodrigues to stoop and head for goal but see the ball come back off the woodwork.

Lewis Putman, with 22 goals to his name this season, appeared to be Oxhey’s focal point in attack but too often he was forced to carry the can by himself. He went close at the end of a quick counter, firing in an early shot which whistle just wide.

The one way traffic continued and Putman volleyed wide, before a ball in from the left was met by a header which was guided straight into the grateful arms of Jack Sillitoe.

Aylesbury finally awoke from their slumber, with a couple of dangerous crosses coming in from either flank but resulting in nothing.

Then, with their first meaningful effort of the game, the Ducks edged in front. Field collected the ball on the right touchline, went on a mazy run towards goal, past several desperate challenges before dispatching the ball past Mark Jessop. 1-0 Aylesbury

Although the goal generally raised United’s game, it wasn’t immediately so and they first had to contend with Oxhey forcing a trio of corner kicks in succession, though they weren’t able to profit from them.

The visitors went slightly closer when the ball was somehow allowed to bounce over Wood and Sillitoe in the area, Putman hooking the ball back from the byeline, where John Mulholland was on hand to clear.

Once again, it wasn’t the best defending from Aylesbury, but the statistics of a second clean sheet in a week show that the Ducks are doing a fine job in that department.

Lee Inch had a couple of ambitious efforts sail way off target, before Putman turned inside Mulholland and directed a low, skimming shot goalwards which just missed the target, though Sillitoe looked to have it covered in any event.

In first half stoppage time Mulholland was inches away from scoring when he met a pinpoint corner kick from Daniel Jones with a thumping header, only the crossbar denying him glory.

The second half started with the Ducks on top, and for a good twenty minute spell they had Jets pushed back in their own half.

Field might have done better when he beat Jessop to a ball behind the defence, but he lifted the ball high over the bar with a quick shot; had he realised how far off his line Jessop was then pushing the ball past him would have been the better option.

Two minutes later and Mulholland hooked a free-kick back across goal to Field who volleyed into the side netting, and Russell Clark also went close with a header at a corner kick that he placed just over.

Clark’s afternoon came to an end shortly afterwards with both sides making double substitutions – Aylesbury introducing Tom Barnett and the fit again Paul Edgeworth and reverting back to a 4-4-2 system with Marcus Sawyer – whose deputising for Joey Acheampong hadn’t really worked – moving to his more familiar left sided position.

Another excellent Jones ball into the box picked out the run of Warren Garcia who headed over, before three minutes later Edgeworth found Sawyer but his shot was blocked.

With the game entering the last fifteen minutes, Jets found a renewed sense of urgency, the fresh legs of their substitutes aiding their quest for an equaliser.

The visitors created a few chances of note too: Alexis Bernal levered the ball down for Gavin Hart who could only shoot straight at Sillitoe, and Hart then turned provider when he played in Putman to shoot on the turn but direct the ball just over.

United conceded a cheap corner from which Cornelius Keating was afforded a free-header, but he put the ball over, and Aylesbury had to continue defending hard as Barnett and then Jones did well to clear the ball.

A late corner from the visitors was again well defended, and from the resulting breakaway Garcia brought the ball a long way forward down the right before picking out Field, but his shot was saved by the legs of Jessop, Field then unable to net the rebound from a tight angle.

Right at the death Sillitoe made a good low stop with his legs to deny Lee Inch, who had got on the end of Putman’s cross.

Goalkeeper Mark Jessop came up for the subsequent corner kick and then long throw, but Aylesbury survived the late pressure and claimed yet another win.
