Match Report

Aylesbury progressed to the semi-finals of the Berks & Bucks Senior Trophy, but not in the manner anyone would have liked following a dramatic night at Bell Close that ended with the sad spectacle of Lee Bircham taken to hospital with a double fracture of his right leg.

A match which had been in danger of abandonment from the first minute due to ever-worsening foggy conditions was finally brought to a halt following the horrific injury just past the hour mark.

Following an honourable request by Shrivenham FC the match will not be replayed and the result is to stand.

With the visitors struggling for form at the wrong end of the Hellenic League Premier Division, the first half was an utterly one-sided affair, and United stormed into a seventh minute lead when Stacey Field finished well from the left of the goal.

A fine goal saw Aylesbury move two ahead on 25 minutes, when a deep corner was played out to Paul Edgeworth on the edge of the area who dribbled sideways before picking out Steve Hatch with an inch-perfect delivery that the centre back confidently fired home.

Number three quickly arrived and setup by another brilliant cross – Daniel Jones the creator this time with a brilliant ball in from the left which Zac Reynolds got on the end of to squeeze in between keeper and the post.

Aylesbury’s full-backs were attacking at will, and it was Jack Wood who got forward from his right back position to add the fourth five minutes later, albeit slightly fortuitously as he chipped a cross towards the back post which deceived the keeper and dropped into the net.

United could have had more goals before the break with the chances they created, whilst Jack Sillitoe was a virtual spectator, but the start of the second period was more even as United lost momentum after the withdrawal of Louis Austin who had suffered a knock, before the night was brought to a premature end by a clattering challenge on Bircham.
