The Ducks had nicked a first half lead, but were gunned down by Slough’s quality after the break as the promotion chasers scored three goals in seven minutes to take a 3-1 lead, before United’s late fight back gained them their first home point of the season.
Slough were the dominant force in the opening twenty minutes as several corner kicks were either wasted or well dealt with by Aylesbury, whilst Alex Tokarczyk made a good fourth-minute save to tip Scott Harris’s header wide.
Five minutes later and Ryan Lake curled in a left flank cross which ex-football league defender David Woozley headed well over.
The Rebels’ long throws were also a cause of danger to the Ducks, and when one was flicked into the box Ben Edwards had a great chance but spooned it over from two yards out.
Another cross in from the left lead to an away penalty appeal for handball which was waved away, and Aylesbury gradually came into the game more as the half passed, and forced their first corner on nineteen minutes before taking the lead less than ten minutes later.
A cynical foul on Richard Armstrong resulted in a free kick which Keith Williams curled towards the far bottom corner, and Jake Somerville spilled the ball to Jack Wood, who was on hand to gleefully turn it into the net. 1-0 Aylesbury
Seconds later and United could have had a second as a long ball forward caught Somerville charging from his goal, heading the ball clear and only conceding a corner, which was punched away by the keeper where an off-balance Liam Smyth could only blast over.
Tokarczyk made another good save to keep out a free header, and Aylesbury’s goal was leading a charmed life for a time as Woozley’s header hit the bar, the ball scrambled away only as far as Scott Harris whose shot was superbly saved by Tokarczyk at close range.
In stoppage time Lee Grace for Aylesbury and Warren Harris for Slough both struck long shots which were comfortably held and wide respectively, as the Ducks preserved their precious lead going into the interval.
Aylesbury 1-0 Slough
As expected, a resurgent Rebels emerged from the dressing rooms and the Ducks had to contend with an early barrage of pressure that saw Warren Harris have a shot blocked and Scott Harris head wide from a left wing cross, whilst several more corner kicks came to nothing.
It was Aylesbury who very nearly added to the scoring though when, at the end of a counter attacking move, Paul Edgeworth crossed low for Jason Blackett who, with all the casualness in the world poked a shot towards goal which rebounded off the post with Somerville a spectator.
Slough found another gear though and soon established full control of the game with a flurry of goals.
Firstly, Darren Wheeler went on a long run that took him in from the left flank before finding the opposite corner with a precise low drive. 1-1
Only a last ditch tackle from Keith Williams prevented Warren Harris reaching a through ball which more than likely would have resulted in a goal, but within three minutes the Slough man did find the net – producing a crisp finish after Lake’s cut back came to him on the edge of the box. 2-1 Slough
Returning striker Danny Burnell went close when he span and shot having been fed by Warren Harris, though a third goal was soon to arrive. A corner from the right was met by the unmarked Lake who fired back across goal for Scott Harris to net. 3-1 Slough
Given Slough’s convincing lead, and the alarming sudden ease with which their attacks were finding the mark, it at that point looked a massive ask for Aylesbury to get anything from the game.
However, the Ducks were given hope with a quick goal back scored by Lee Grace, firing in a shot from just outside the area which took a deflection to wrong foot Somerville and find the net. 2-3
With neither side willing to compromise in attack, the match continued to a thoroughly entertaining duel and Burnell should have done better when Scott Harris’s flick released him but he shot straight at Tokarczyk.
Aylesbury made an attacking change by, in addition to the already introduced Dom Petrucci, replaced Ben Baines – who had been playing in an unfamiliar full back role – with Joey Acheampong and also brought on Daniel Jones replacing Grace on the left.
The Ducks were again caught short at the back but Wheeler shot well wide, before at the other end Petrucci went on a long run but saw his firm drive blocked.
The visitors had another faint penalty appeal for handball against Keith Williams turned down at yet another corner, and the game really was end to end stuff as United took their turn to attack as Acheampong was put through by Blackett’s header, but a defender recovered to block his shot at the last and the ball spun behind.
Aylesbury forced three corners, the first flashing all the way across goal, the second then being clawed away by Somerville conceding another corner, which eventually lead to the equalising goal.
Richard Armstrong appeared to be having his shirt pulled, but the ball broke for Petrucci lurking just outside the box who had the composure to arrow a fine drive into the bottom corner and spark wild celebrations. 3-3
Still the game wasn’t done as Jones flashed a dangerous cross into the box with Blackett just unable to get a touch, but it was the Rebels who twice came close in stoppage time.
Tokarczyk beat away a shot from Warren Harris and, after Petrucci was penalised for handball, a Slough free kick caused chaos in the box and from the scramble Jones nearly put through his own net in clearing the ball behind.
The resulting corner saw United’s hero Petrucci back in his box defending, and doing enough to ensure his side got the point their character deserved, and their first of the season as the home side.
