Looking to bounce back after losing in the Berks and Bucks Cup on Tuesday, manager Glyn Creaser restored Olly Stanbridge, Josh Baines, Sonny French and Ollie Hogg to the starting XI, with Vijon Sentain, Reece Cameron, Ellis Hercules and Jordon Frederick reverting to the subs bench, as the Ducks lined up in a more familiar 4-3-3 formation.
Against opponents who are struggling in the league and on the back of two heavy defeats, a fast start would have been the order of the day for the manager. The team responded to the challenge and opened the scoring just 65 seconds after the whistle. Jake Bewley made good progress down the left flank and found Josh Baines; a quick exchange of passes with Chid Onokwai saw him free 10 yards from goal and he expertly slid the ball across Chatham keeper Henry Newcombe and into the far corner for a dream start. 1-0 Aylesbury
Buoyed by the fast start, the Ducks maintained the pressure; a loose pass by Chatham skipper Liam Hickey was picked up by Olly Stanbridge who found Ollie Hogg . He squared the ball to Onokwai who fired just wide of goal into the side netting. Onokwai was proving a menace to the Chatham defence; just two minutes later, Sonny French found him on the left. He cut inside and fired towards goal where Newcombe made a good save at his near post.
It took until the 15th minute for the visitors to get an attempt on goal; a foul by Ryan Kinnane on Mohammad Kaffo saw Owen Price float in a free kick which was met by the head of Hickey, but his header was wide of Oualah’s goal.
The Ducks extended their lead in the 22nd minute. Baines and Onokwai combined again down the left. Onokwai attempted to play French in but the referee awarded a penalty for handball by Hickey. The centre forward picked up the ball and nonchalantly rolled the ball into the net after the keeper dived to his left. 2-0 Aylesbury
A poor goal kick by Oualah was intercepted by Tom Youngs, who passed the ball infield to Price. He tried his luck from 25 yards, but fortunately for the home keeper, the shot was straight at him for an easy save. Three minutes before half time French found Ollie Hogg who headed on to Baines whose first time shot found the side netting.
As the clock ticked down to half time, the visitors were presented with a route back into the match. A soft foul by Bewley on the left edge of the penalty area on Joshua Jackson saw the winger float in a free kick which was met firmly by the unmarked Dave Botterill to reduce the lead. 1-2
The second half saw Chatham replace centre forward Kaffo with the experienced Luke Medley, returning following an injury lay off. It was Medley who had the chance to level the scores just 3 minutes into the half. A free kick from Youngs cleared Kinnane and was met at the back post by the substitute, whose attempt on goal was well saved at point blank range by Oualah.
It took just 7 minutes of the second half for the Ducks to extend their lead. A deep free kick was headed on by Kinnane towards Onokwai, whose shot was blocked for a corner. Ollie Hogg delivered the corner kick, straight to Jack Wood who rose above the defence and headed powerfully home, giving the keeper no chance to save. 3-1 Aylesbury
While the Ducks had the luxury of a 2 goal lead, it wasn’t all one way traffic, with the visitors playing some nice football and creating their own chances. On 57 minutes, a long ball from Price to Jackson saw the winger cut infield past Bewley and strike a shot from 25 yards, which was always rising and cleared the bar. Eight minutes later, a slip by Kinnane just inside his own half saw Medley free to run in towards goal. However, his measured shot across Oualah struck the far post and away to safety. Just a minute later and Ross Morley picked up a long ball forward and cut inside onto his left foot, but again he couldn’t beat Oualah, shooting straight at him.
The best move of the half from the Ducks saw some slick passing from Baines to Hogg, who in turn found Greg Williams 25 yards out, however his powerful shout was well saved by Newcombe.
In the 73rd minute, Jackson on the left found Botterill arriving in support. He got a shot away but it was touched over the bar by Oualah. From the resulting corner, the Ducks broke downfield through Gavin Hinds-Cadette. His cross found the head of substitute Jordon Frederick whose powerful header was directed down but superbly saved by Newcombe, who was having a great game.
Adding to his catalogue of saves, the young keeper again denied the Ducks in the final minute. Sonny French was well tackled by Okosieme in the centre of the field, but regained possession to pass to Reece Cameron. He advanced and shot low towards the far post, but again the keeper pulled out a fantastic save. He was however beaten in the second minute of added on time. Bewley made good ground down the left and pulled the ball back to Frederick arriving in the penalty area. This time his powerful shot found the net to wrap up the scoring to give the scoreline a slightly flattering look for the home side. 4-1 Aylesbury
The referee blew his whistle shortly afterwards to confirm the win; the reward is a trip to Hastings United on Sat 29th October, not to mention the very welcome prize money. Next up for the Ducks is a home league cup match against Wantage Town on Wednesday evening.
