      Match Report

      Match report by Chris Howarth

Greg Williams first half strike had the Ducks dreaming of a cup upset against Maidenhead United. However, it wasn’t to be as the visitors came back in the second half to take all of the spoils in a tightly contested quarter final.

The Ducks would have to bring all their fight to cause an upset against a strong Maidenhead side, and in the third minute they showed they had it. Josh Kelly found his way in behind the Ducks defence and somehow Harry Tucker managed to slide in and stop what looked to be a certain goal.

5 minutes later, The Ducks would be up against it again, this time Nana Owusu cleverly worked his way through the Aylesbury defence before rippling a shot into the side netting. With 10 minutes played, Owusu was involved again, the winger fed Ryan Bird down the left, but his strike rolled just wide.

With fifteen minutes played, The Ducks still found themselves under pressure. Owusu whipped the ball in deep from the left-hand side, Bird rose highest to head the ball goal-wards, but the striker couldn’t put it on target as the ball rolled past the post.

United finally managed to have a sniff on goal with 17 minutes played. Max Hercules cut inside from the left to gain space before rifling a shot into the hands of Maidenhead stopper Nick Hamann. 5 minutes later, The Ducks pushed on again. After some great build up play, the ball fell kindly for Ollie Hogg to strike and his effort stung the hands of Hamann.

With 25 minutes played, a short free-kick from the Ducks allowed a one-two between Hercules and Greg Williams. Williams cut into space and managed to test the visitor’s keeper low to his left.

With half an hour played, against all the odds, The Ducks took the lead. The visitors gave the ball away to Hogg deep inside their own half, the midfielder moved it wide to Hercules who drove his cross towards Ben Seaton, he let it roll through his legs to allow Williams to touch it out of his feet and poke home. 1-0 Aylesbury

The goal proved to be the last chance of the first half and The Ducks went into half time with the lead.

      Half-time: Aylesbury 1-0 Maidenhead

United tried to maintain legs as they replaced Tucker with Callum Mapley just after the second half got underway.

The second half began the same way the first ended. The first chance came in the 58th minute and it was a sucker punch for the Ducks. Harold Odametey turned away from trouble before feeding Owusu down the left-hand side, he crossed in for Bird to smash beyond Archie Davis. 1-1

With 25 minutes to play, The Ducks were picking the ball out of their net again however, this one was ruled out for offside. Ayo Odileye met the cross from Odametey and volleyed home, but he was judged to be offside by the official.

The Ducks were up against it with 20 minutes to go, Chris Crook missed a defensive header and allowed James Akintunde through on goal. However, the striker couldn’t direct his effort on target and the Ducks breathed a sigh of relief as the ball rolled wide.

Ben Williams reacted on the touchline sending Aaron Berry on for Hogg to shake things up going forward. With 13 minutes left on the clock, The Ducks came close. Anthony Ball outmuscled his man high up in the visitor’s territory before unleashing a strike that flew just over the bar.

With 10 minutes to play, Aylesbury were dealt a huge sucker punch. Ayo Olideye went down under Williams challenge and the referee made the call to give Maidenhead United a penalty. Olideye stepped up and slotted the ball away, sending Davis the wrong way. 2-1 Maidenhead

Tre Mitford was then sent on for Seaton and he was straight into the thick of the action. In the last two minutes Mitford got onto the end of a Hercules cross, but his effort was well held by Hamann. The game closed at 1-2 and The Ducks were knocked out of the Berks and Bucks Senior cup despite a valiant effort.

A huge amount of positives to take away for Aylesbury and they will look to use these on their travels to Berkhamsted back in league action on Saturday.
