Ducks See Off Tring With Two of the Best

Tuesday 30 August 2011 - 3:18 pm | Added by: Admin to First Team, Club News | No comments |

Aylesbury's fine run of results continued with a 2-0 win away at last season's runners up Tring Athletic.

The goals, when they came, were two of the best as the Ducks produced a professional result without ever truly hitting top form.

Daniel Jones was first man on the scoresheet, curling home a beautiful effort from outside the area after 28 minutes.

As Athletic edged ever more into the game, Aylesbury were presented the perfect opportunity to double their lead, but Paul Edgeworth saw his penalty superbly saved by Mike Underwood.

A second goal did arrive though, somewhat against the run of play. Ben Baines bewitched his way past two defenders before finishing perfectly into the far bottom corner.

Tring kept going right up until the final whistle and they looked set to score a consolation goal when they won a last minute penalty, but this time Tony Fields' spot kick hit the bar to ensure Aylesbury's clean sheet remained intact.

Ducks Storm to Win in Nine Goal Epic

Saturday 27 August 2011 - 11:02 am | Added by: Admin to Club News, First Team | Eight comments |

After a thoroughly entertaining, crazy and, at times, unbelievable 90 minutes, Aylesbury emerged victorious at Stotfold with a 6-3 win.

For the first 35 minutes the game had looked like being a stalemate as two good outfits cancelled each other out.

But things exploded into life with 5 goals in the last ten minutes of the first half, with Stotfold opening the scoring through

Nobody could have expected what was to come though, as three minutes later the home side found themselves trailing 3-1 when Silvestri and a Field brace within four minutes of each other swung the match.

Stotfold were far from finished though, and they pulled another goal back before the interval, and then managed to force a leveller at 3-3 almost straight from the restart.

Aylesbury's raft of attacking options eventually won them the game though, as Tony Joyce introduced Joey Acheampong and Melford Simpson in the 52nd minute, and it was the former who re-established Aylesbury's lead with virtually his first touch.

Simpson scored the Ducks' 5th less than a minute later, and Ben Baines extended Aylesbury's lead further with a 68th minute goal.

There were still further chances to increase the scoring, but it mattered no as Aylesbury secured a fabulous result from a tricky looking away fixture.

Ducks See Off Hertford to Win Again

Aylesbury recorded another pleasing home win on the back of their 4-0 FA Cup beating of Bracknell, by defeating Hertford Town 3-0.

Aside from a limited period in the first half, United were well in control of the match and good value for their win, and indeed could have added more goals.

It took 34 minutes for the opener to arrive, Enzo Silvestri scraping the ball over the line from close range as the visitors stood and watched Mulholland's effort rebound off the crossbar.

That was followed just six minutes later with a brilliant second. Ben Baines produced an excellent chest trap and laid the ball inside for Stacey Field, who bent an exquisite shot around the motionless keeper and into the net.

To their credit, Town never threw in the towel but despite all their efforts in the second half Sillitoe was never extended.

It was Vinnie Shrieves who scored Aylesbury's third when he slide in on the end of Jones' free-kick to score.

More chances came and went as United had to be content with their three, but it was another very pleasing 90 minutes for the Ducks.

Aylesbury United have clinched the signing of striker Melford Simpson it was confirmed today.

The giant striker has proven quality in the Premier Division, having scored 16 goals for Hadley last season.

Simpson, 23, almost single handedly destroyed the Ducks last season - scoring a hat-trick in Hadley's 5-0 win over the Ducks at Parkfield, then both goals in the 2-2 draw at Bell Close later in the campaign.

He goes straight into the squad for Wednesday's home match with Hertford Town.

Super Ducks Fly Into Next Round with Easy Win

Sunday 21 August 2011 - 10:12 am | Added by: Admin to Club News, First Team | Two comments |

Aylesbury captain John Mulholland was the unlikely hat-trick hero as the Ducks crushed visiting Bracknell Town 4-0 at Bell Close to progress in the FA Cup this afternoon.

Scoring with two carbon copy headers from corner kicks and a penalty kick, Mulholland was just as imperious at the back though Aylesbury were rarely troubled by a poor looking Bracknell side.

You can only beat what's put in front of you though, and once Ben Baines had converted from Jones' free-kick after just five minutes, it looked like only one team was going to win.

Mulholland netted his first on 15 minutes, heading in Jones' corner, and his second, an exact replica, on 64 minutes.

Bracknell had briefly improved in the second half, but they never showed enough attacking intent or desire to haul themselves back into the match and will be disappointed with their showing.

Mulholland then crowned his and Aylesbury's excellent performance by thumping home an 81st minute penalty after a foul on Baines, to make it a fully deserved 4-0.

United's reward for their win is a home encounter with Southern League side North Leigh in two weeks time.

Ducks Downed by Dunstable

Wednesday 17 August 2011 - 3:02 pm | Added by: Admin to First Team, Club News | One comment |

Aylesbury were narrowly beaten 2-1 at home to newly promoted AFC Dunstable this evening.

In an entertaining match between two good footballing sides, it took a goal three minutes from time by the visitors to settle the outcome.

United were the better team in the opening third as their visitors failed to settle, and they looked set to go ahead when they won a 16th minute penalty, but Mickey O'Farrell's first shot was saved before he skied the rebound

Aylesbury had to pay for that miss when Dunstable then went ahead through a long range Craig Butler strike.

United managed to level before the break courtesy of an excellent Garcia volley, but as the second half wore on they became second best as the visitors looked the sharper and fitter side.

But as the game entered the closing stages it looked like Aylesbury had done enough to claim a point.

Dunstable had other ideas though and substitute Lee Hayward rode his way to the byeline before squeezing in a shot which Danny Jones just couldn't keep out on the goal-line, and the three points headed back with the visitors.

The Ducks will need to pick themselves up quickly as they now turn their attentions to the FA Cup and the visit of Bracknell Town on SUNDAY.

Ducks Recover to Win Season Opener

Saturday 13 August 2011 - 11:46 am | Added by: Admin to Club News, First Team | Three comments |

Aylesbury got their season off to a winning start, but had to do things the hard way after falling behind early on at Broxbourne Borough.

The home side went ahead with just three minutes on the clock when Tony Cookey got the better of John Mulholland before firing home.

Aylesbury dug in though and as the half wore on they grew in stature, and midway through the first period they equalised.

Mulholland atoned for his earlier error, probably his only in a resolute performance, by arriving to turn in at the far post after Daniel Jones' inswinging free-kick had been lost by home keeper Ed Thompson.

Seven minutes later and the turnaround was complete. Enzo Silvestri, making his return to the club for a fourth time, capped an excellent display by scoring from Field's low cross. Again the keeper was partly to blame as he failed to hold David King's fizzing drive, allowing Field to retrieve the ball and turn it back across goal for Silvestri to poke in.

Broxbourne tried hard to force a leveller after the break, and at times Aylesbury rode their luck - notably when a deflected long range shot struck the post.

The Ducks managed to contain their hosts though, and even called Thompson to make up for his own earlier errors by making a fine save to deny Field's curler.

A good start to the season for the Ducks, who now face newly promoted AFC Dunstable in another tough match on Wednesday night, who won 6-0 at Hanwell Town this afternoon to start their own campaign with a bang.

Four More Sign On

Wednesday 10 August 2011 - 10:24 am | Added by: Admin to Club News, First Team | Eight comments |

Following last night's pre-season friendly at New Bradwell St. Peter, an additional four players have signed forms for the new season.

Perhaps the most notable of the four is fans favourite Enzo Silvestri, who links up with the club for a fourth spell (having twice retired from football!). Enzo has made 97 appearances for the Ducks since first making his debut way back in 2001.

Also putting pen to paper is young midfielder Enzo Carrillo, who has first team experience at Kettering Town where he was a youth team product.

The two Enzo's are joined by strong centre forward Vinnie Shrieves, and tricky midfielder Sean Synnott.

We welcome all four to the club!

Disappointing End To Ducks' Pre-season

Tuesday 09 August 2011 - 3:14 pm | Added by: Admin to First Team, Club News | One comment |

Aylesbury's otherwise excellent pre-season campaign ended on a disappointing note as the Ducks lost 1-0 at New Bradwell St. Peter.

Again, it was a rather different looking United side lining up than in their previous match, and after a sluggish display the home side were deserved winners.

The deciding goal came in the 11th minute with a fine goal from Bradwell's number 10 who cut inside, beating several defenders, before burying a shot just inside the post beyond Timberlake.

The diminutive striker was the star of the show, going close on several occasions as Aylesbury struggled to cope with his pace and trickery. He also won his side a 37th minute penalty, only for Timberlake to make his second penalty stop of pre-season to keep the Ducks alive in the game at the break.

Although the second half was marginally better, it was still largely devoid of chances.

Vinnie Shrieves nearly salvaged a draw for the visitors right at the death though when he lobbed the keeper but cruelly saw the ball bounce off the turf and clear the empty goal.

Although not scoring for the first friendly of the campaign is a blot on Aylesbury's season preparations, on the whole the performances have been good and the team can now look forward to Saturday's curtain raiser at Broxbourne Borough.

United team: Matt TIMBERLAKE, Jack WOOD, Daniel JONES, Justin GORDON, John MULHOLLAND (Paul EDGEWORTH), Craig TOWNSEND (Tom BARNETT), Warren GARCIA (Sean SYNNOTT), Mickey O'FARRELL (Vinnie SHRIEVES), Ben BAINES (Joey ACHEAMPONG), Enzo SILVESTRI (Enzo CARRILLO)

Ducks Beat Doughboys

Saturday 06 August 2011 - 10:51 am | Added by: Admin to Club News, First Team | Two comments |

A very understrength Aylesbury continued their unbeaten run in pre-season by winning 2-0 at United Counties League outfit Wellingborough Town.

Missing messrs Sillitoe, King, Mercer, Toms, Garcia, Barnett, Field and Acheampong, United overcame their unfamiliarity to score a goal in either half and take the win.

The opener came with just nine minutes on the clock, in comical circumstances. Mickey O'Farrell's shot appeared to be going wide and of little danger as the keeper beat Shreeves to the ball, but unluckily for him his clearance hit the back of a defender and bounced into the empty net.

The home side rarely troubled the Ducks during the first half, but when they did stand-in keeper Ben Donaldson was on top form to deny them - making one superb save from point blank range.

After the break United had to defend strongly to keep their hosts at bay, as they came under sustained spells of pressure - and Donaldson made another great save.

The game was wrapped up five minutes from time when Ben Baines received Sean Synnott's through ball, showed great strength to beat his defender before firing past the goalkeeper.

Another good workout for the Ducks over, they now go into their final pre-season match at New Bradwell St. Peter on Tuesday evening.

Aylesbury team: Ben DONALDSON, Jack WOOD, Daniel JONES, Justin GORDON, John MULHOLLAND (Tony JOYCE), Craig TOWNSEND, Sean SYNNOTT (Paul EDGEWORTH), Enzo SILVESTRI, Vinnie SHREEVES, Mickey O'FARRELL, Enzo CARRILLO (Ben BAINES).

Ducks Draw Again

Wednesday 03 August 2011 - 3:05 pm | Added by: Admin to Club News, First Team | Eleven comments |

Aylesbury recorded a second successive pre-season draw with a 1-1 result against a Stevenage XI side in their only home friendly.

It was another good workout for the Ducks against professional opposition, and United lead a fair proportion of the game courtesy of Ben Baines' 32nd minute opener.

The goal came out of nothing when the United number 9 capitalised on a defensive error and coolly slotted past the keeper.

Stevenage levelled five minutes into the second half when a wicked cross was too good for even Sillitoe to keep out.

The game then degenerated as a number of niggles and substitutions affected the rhythm.

Temperatures were rising on both sides following a couple of bouts of handbags, before Stevenage were reduced to 10-men following a ridiculous and not so 'friendly' late challenge.

Aylesbury were unable to capitalise on their man advantage, and instead it was the visitors who came closest to nicking a win late on, but it finished even.
