Hard Working Ducks Frustrate League Leaders

Wednesday 26 February 2014 - 08:40 am | Added by: Ian Pluck to First Team, Club News

Aylesbury United made the trip up the M1 to face Calor Southern League Div 1 Central leaders Rugby Town.  A marked difference in the playing conditions from recent matches, with the Butlin Rd pitch in immaculate condition, covered in something allegedly called grass!  It's been so long since we played on such a surface, but it gave the Ducks the opportunity to show that when the conditions are good, they could pass the ball and play football that compares with the best teams in the division.

Following his goal against St Ives on Saturday, Paul Edgeworth was restored to the starting line up alonside Stacey Field in place of Dom Petrucci.  Changes in midfield meant Ben Baines and Zack Reynolds dropped to the bench, with Lee Grace and Danny Jones filling the wide berths.  Bill Morgan was restored to the starting line up in place of the injured Greg Williams, with Jack Wood playing in the holding midfield position.  One final change saw Richard Armstrong included on the bench for the first time in 5 weeks.

With all the changes, and playing against the league leaders, it might have been expected that the Ducks would have been on the back foot.  However they played their part to the full, especially in the first half.  Indeed it was the visitors who took the lead, with Paul Edgeworth scoring his second header in successive games converting from Liam Smyth's well flighted free kick in the 22nd minute.  Rugby showed why they are top of the league, passing the ball well and probing the Duck's defence.  They equalised with a great shot from Justin Marsden, the ball rebounding to him on the edge of the box after Jack Sillitoe had saved well from Jamie Towers.

In the second half, it was a backs to the wall defensive display from the Ducks, with Jack Wood excelling in the holding role in front of the defence, and keeper Sillitoe pulling off a number of impressive saves.  The whole defence played their part, a number of well timed last ditch tackles and blocks denying the home side.  It has to be said that as the game went on, Rugby began to lose their composure somewhat, with many wild shots wide or over the bar, which failed to trouble Sillitoe, symbolised at the death by skipper Alex Gudger trying a very speculative long shot from the half way line which sailed harmlessly wide of goal, although Sillitoe was well placed to save if necessary.

The Ducks returned home with a share of the points and can be well satisfied with their night's work.  With the squad just about at full strength, manager Tony Joyce will have the unenviable task of deciding his best line up in the matches to come, although with matches coming thick and fast, a large squad will be a blessing.  Having matched the best in the division, we move on to play at Marlow on Saturday with nothing to fear.

Honours Even At Bell Close

Saturday 22 February 2014 - 10:30 pm | Added by: Ian Pluck to First Team, Club News

Hot on the heels of the fine win against Beaconsfield, the Ducks faced mid table St Ives this afternoon, looking to continue the form of that match.  Whereas the pitch on Tuesday evening was wet and heavy, the dry weather of the past few days had seen the pitch dry out and appear bereft of grass, especially through the middle.

Unlike Tuesday, it was the opposition who started the game the stronger, with St Ives taking a 2 goal lead inside the first quarter of the match.  However, this Ducks team has shown many times this season that they won’t lie down, today was no different;  Liam Smyth with a stunning strike from 25 yds just before half time getting them back in the game.  The entertainment continued in the second half, with a goal for each side in the first 5 minutes.  Despite the pitch being very uneven and the ball being difficult to control, both sides played their part in what was a very attractive game of football, and certainly a good advert for the league they play in.  Chances aplenty for both sides went begging until Paul Edgeworth, on as a substitute, got to Steve Hatch’s cross ahead of the goalkeeper to equalise.

That was to be the end of the scoring, with both sides equally deserving of a point in what had been a very entertaining match.  Next up for the Ducks is a tough looking assignment at top of the table Rugby on Tuesday evening.

Ducks Return To Form to Defeat The Rams

Wednesday 19 February 2014 - 7:01 pm | Added by: Ian Pluck to First Team, Club News

On the back of two heavy defeats which saw them concede 11 goals, Aylesbury United produced an impressive turn round in fortunes with a fine display to defeat high flying Beaconsfield SYCOB. The visitors came into the match on the back of a 13 match unbeaten run in the league, but a determined and disciplined performance from the Ducks ensured the run was to come to an end.

Two goals either side of half time, the first a trademark Stacey Field volley from 20 yards as the first half approached added on time, followed by an equally impressive strike from outside of the area 15 minutes into the second half from Zack Reynolds saw the Ducks take the points. In truth, the Ducks were good value for the win; Beaconsfield losing their discipline in the second half, which saw their manager sent to the stands for persistent dissent to the officials and left back Craig Carby shown a second yellow, also for voicing his frustrations too forcibly at the referee.

Despite the visitors making attacking substitutions, the Ducks defended extremely well and thoroughly deserved not only the 3 points, but also a hard earned clean sheet, which will put them in good spirits ahead of the Berks and Bucks Cup semi-final against old foes Chesham on Thursday evening.

Division One Central Roundup

Saturday 15 February 2014 - 10:23 pm | Added by: Admin to Club News, Calor League | | Used tags: ,

Once again, it was an extremely limited programme in the Calor League Division One Central, with just five matches escaping the waterlogging fate that caused six postponements.

Promotion chasing Dunstable Town suffered three successive defeats for the first time since the 2008/09 season, as they went down 2-1 at midtable Marlow. Dunstable's leading scorer Lee Roache scored his 25th goal of the campaign to give the visitors a fourth minute lead, but Marlow's own hitman Jon Bennett scored a brace in either half to complete the turnaround.

With league leaders Rugby Town's game called off, the top of the table looks no different, but the nearest of the challengers in action, Slough Town, moved up to third with a 5-3 home win against Aylesbury United.

In a thrilling encounter, The Rebels twice lead before being pegged back, before taking a commanding lead to 4-2, only for United to pull another goal back before a further late Slough strike completed the scoring, Edward Smith scoring twice.

Royston Town also moved up in the table - leapfrogging the non-playing Beaconsfield SYCOB, along with Slough - to fourth with a 2-0 home win over Aylesbury FC, central defender Joe De La Salle scoring twice.

Also victorious were another of the playoff hopefuls - Northwood - who won 3-1 at strugglers Leighton Town, with all four goals scored in the first half. Twin brother of manager Mark Burgess, James Burgess, opened the scoring after 38 minutes, with Karl Olyide netting a brace either side of Sam Chapman's goal for the hosts.

Lastly, two bottom half sides with similar records met at Mill Meadow, as Chalfont St. Peter and Uxbridge cancelled each other out in a 1-1 draw. Winger Romaine Walker gave Saints an 11th minute lead before Callum Madigan curled home an equaliser on the stroke of half time.

Slough Win Another Thriller With Ducks

Saturday 15 February 2014 - 5:00 pm | Added by: Admin to First Team, Club News | | Used tags: ,

Aylesbury returned to league action with a much better performance than their Royston humbling, but were ultimately on the losing side in an eight goal thriller with Slough Town.

The hosts went ahead in the eleventh minute, only for Aylesbury to level seconds later through Stacey Field, but Slough re-established their lead midway through the half through Scott Harris as the first half ended 2-1.

United equalised again early in the second half when Jason Blackett powered home, and once again were unable to hold on as Slough's attacking threat gained them a third goal.

Slough added a fourth twelve minutes from time, but Keith Williams pulled a goal back almost straight away as the action-packed nature of the game continued, to make it 4-3 with five minutes remaining.

Aylesbury pushed on for an equaliser in the final seconds, and were caught as a result - with goalkeeper Jack Sillitoe attacking a corner kick Slough were able to roll a fifth goal into the empty net - final score of a pulsating match 5-3.

Division One Central Midweek Roundup

Wednesday 12 February 2014 - 08:55 am | Added by: Admin to Club News, Calor League | | Used tags: ,

Two matches were played in the Calor League Division One Central on Tuesday night, as another three were lost to waterlogged pitches.

Playoff contenders Barton Rovers and Beaconsfield SYCOB met at Sharpenhoe Road, sharing the spoils in a 1-1 draw. Jermaine Hall opened the scoring for the hosts after 20 minutes with his eighth of the season, before Brad Hewitt levelled for the Rams to take their unbeaten run in the league to 13 games and edge his side into 3rd place in the league.

At the other end of the table, Chalfont St. Peter moved up to 13th, leaving it late to beat third-bottom side North Greenford United - under the leadership of former reserve team manager Paul Palmer for the first time following Neil Shipperley's departure - with a Romaine Walker goal seven minutes from time winning the Saints maximum points.

The Northamptonshire derby of Daventry Town vs Kettering Town was one of the three games called off, the others being Marlow vs Chertsey Town and Potters Bar Town vs Dunstable Town.

Division One Central Roundup

Saturday 08 February 2014 - 5:50 pm | Added by: Admin to Club News, First Team | | Used tags: ,

With the wet weather again having the final say, the Calor League Division One Central programme was badly affected with just two games taking place and nine postponed.

After putting six past Aylesbury United in the Red Insure Cup in midweek, Royston Town had to endure a taste of their own medicine as Rugby Town thrashed the Crows 6-1 at Butlin Road.

League top scorer David Kolodynski scored a hat trick - taking his tally to 25 league goals - whilst Seb Lake-Gaskin netted twice, and Jamie Towers was also on target, with Reece Dobson scoring the 'consolation' late on for Royston, to make it two in two for him since joining the club.

Dunstable Town suffering their second defeat of the week meant the result puts Rugby top of the table by two points.

The Creasey Park outfit, having lost 2-0 at Barton Rovers on Tuesday, were beaten 1-0 at home to Egham Town with Mo Harkin scoring the winner on 83 minutes.

Midweek Action Roundup

Wednesday 05 February 2014 - 10:43 am | Added by: Admin to Club News, First Team | | Used tags: , ,

Table topping Dunstable Town's 16-game unbeaten league run stretching back to September was ended by Bedfordshire rivals Barton Rovers, who won 2-0 at Sharpenhoe Road. Goals from Joe Reynolds and home debutant Robbie Hastings denied Dunstable the chance to extend their lead at the top of the table, with just one point between them and nearest rivals Rugby Town.

Slough Town secured a 2-0 home win over 'Slough old boys' of Aylesbury FC - managed by former Slough boss Steve Bateman and with a host of ex-Rebels amongst their ranks. Warren Harris scored both the goals to lift Town up to 3rd in the table and ensure a disappointing first game of 2014 for FC.

At Egham Town, Ashford Town (Mx) went down to a 4-0 defeat - their 19th straight league defeat. Egham top scorer Ryan O'Toole bagged two goals for the hosts, with Andy Crossley and Mo Harkin also on target.

Red Insure Cup

Three of the semi-finalists are now known following this week's matches in the Red Insure Cup.

Hungerford Town put seven past Burnham in a match of ten-goals, as Stefan Brown and Mark Draycott both scored hat tricks in a 7-3 win, to leave new Burnham manager Rob Mallinson (replacing Martin Stone, who resigned last month) still searching for his first win.

Two Division One South & West sides met in South Wales, with a first minute own goal and an Ed Palmer strike late in the first half giving Tiverton Town a 2-0 win at Merthyr Town.

On Monday night, Beaconsfield SYCOB were unable to take their excellent league form into the cup competition, as they lost out 3-1 at Premier Division Redditch United, who were 3-0 ahead at half-time, Brian Haule adding a 'consolation' for the Rams with 15 minutes remaining.

The final quarter final will be contested by St. Neots Town and Royston Town, who thrashed Aylesbury United 6-0 in the 3rd Round on Tuesday night, with Kaan Fehmi scoring a first half hat trick.

Ducks Crash Out at Rampant Royston

Tuesday 04 February 2014 - 9:48 pm | Added by: Admin to First Team, Club News | | Used tags: ,

Aylesbury's return to action did not go to plan, as a rampant Royston Town emphatically dumped the Ducks out of the Red Insure Cup with a 6-0 thrashing.

Some of the Crows' football was mesmorising, but United played a part in their own downfall with an abject display.

The hosts were 3-0 up in just 18 minutes and never looked back, with striker Kaan Fehmi helping himself to a first half hat trick before manager Steve Castle used the luxury of withdrawing him at the break with the score 4-0.

The Ducks continued to struggle, never truely getting to grips with Royston in the second half, and the home side added two further goals to progress to the quarter finals and ensure a miserable long journey for Aylesbury.

Division One Central Roundup

Saturday 01 February 2014 - 5:20 pm | Added by: Admin to Club News, First Team | | Used tags: ,

With the wet weather once again wreaking havoc on the fixture schedule, only two matches took place in the Calor League Division One Central this weekend.

In-form Beaconsfield SYCOB's winning run in the league was extended to eight as they moved up to third in the league with a 1-0 win at second placed Rugby Town. With the match heading for a goalless draw, the Rams nicked the win in the fifth minute of stoppage time courtesy of Jack Hutchinson's deflected effort.

There was also late drama at Bell Close, where Leighton Town and Chalfont St. Peter, two teams in the lower echelons of the table, shared a 1-1 draw. Danilson Vicente scored put the Saints ahead just before half time with his first goal for the club, but Ben Gallant's spot kick in the 89th minute salvaged a point for Leighton.
