Generals Grab the Bragging Rights

After two comfortable victories in their first two pre season friendlies, it was step up in class that faced the Ducks today, with a match at Landlords Chesham United.  Depth of squad and ability were the decisive factors as the Generals came away comfortable winners in what was a combative and spicy match at times.

The first goal came in the 3rd minute, a cross from the right by Dave Pearce found Ronny Mfinda unmarked to score with a powerful header from 8 yards, that keeper Archie Davis could only parry into the net.  The score was almost doubled ten minutes later, as Davis slipped on the edge of the box as he attempted to clear upfield; the ball rebounded off Karl Oliyide but bounced just wide of the far post to save Davis' blushes.  The second followed in the 28th minute.  A needless push on Romario Hart by Melvy N'somi on the edge of the penalty area saw the referee point to the slot.  Pearce stepped up to take the kick, to see Davis dive to his right and save.  The follow up shot from Oliyide was agian saved by Davis, but Pearce was on hand to tap in the rebound.  The closest the Ducks came to trubling the home keeper came just a minute before haf time, when a Greg Williams free kick rose above the cross bar.

The second half saw the home side increase the lead in the 53rd minute; a long throw from Adam Martin on the left was headed on and fell to Oliyide; his shot from 10 yards took a big deflection and looped over the helpless Davis and into the net.  As is customary, the second half saw a raft of changes from both sides, disrupting the run of play.  15 minutes from the end the best chance of the day for the Ducks came courtesy of a header from Dave O'Connor, which was acrobatically tipped over the bar by home keeper Ben Goode.

There was to be no more scoring, the Ducks now look forward to a meeting with Colchester United on Tuesday evening, before two remaining friendlies at home to Hanwell next Saturday and finally Northwood away on Sat 10th Aug.
