Ducks too good for young U's

Following defeat against Landlords Chesham United on Saturday, the Ducks returned to Amy Lane to take on a young and pacy Colchester United U18 side.  In a match played in appalling conditions, with heavy rain sweeping down the ground for most of the match, the Ducks experience and strength saw them ease to a comfortable win.

The Ducks took the lead in the 11th minute, a good run by Ben Seaton and a slide rule pass through the defence saw Harry Jones take a good first touch then fire into the bottom corner from 12 yards.  The second followed soon after, the first of what may well be a few penalty decisions to awarded following the Law changes this year, as the referee adjudged that Anthony Ball’s cross hit the arm of a defender, “in an unnatural position”.  Ball stepped up to place the ball to the keeper’s left, although it was parried by Hallett, he couldn’t prevent the goal.

Coaching team Mike Hogg and Paul Batchelor, in the absence of holidaying Ben Williams, made wholesale changes at the start of the second half.  Only the CB pairing of Jordan Jenkins and Derek Feyi stayed on the field.  After 51 minutes, a great cross field ball by Jacob Hutchinson saw Ken Feyi control the ball well with his head, wrong foot the defender as he cut inside and fire a firm shot from 15 yards which gave the keeper no chance to extend the lead.

The young Colchester side battled well in the second half, coming more into the game, influenced in midfield by skipper Sam Cornish.   Passing the ball well, as their pedigree would suggest, they crafted a goal in the 80th minute.  A deep cross from the right sailed over Hopwood’s head, to be headed back into the 6 yard box where it was met by Jake Hutchinson to bury the chance.  Two minutes from time the visitors almost reduced the arrears further.  A corner on the left was cleared to Billy Cracknell 25 yards out, his fierce shot clipped the top of the cross bar and went over.

A useful workout for the Ducks, but like the match on Saturday against Chesham, the true worth of this squad won’t be decided by these two games.  That will come in the next two matches against teams at our own level, now playing in the Isthmian League, Hanwell Town at home on Saturday, followed by a trip to Northwood the following week.
