Paul Curtis' Thoughts

Once again Alistair MacLaren has been in touch with Paul Curtis to get his reaction to yesterday's narrow defeat at Grays:

"I felt the players put in a good effort in the game, they gave their best, considering the late changes to the line-up. Greg Williams withdrew from the line-up, as his knees are still causing him problems. Jay Gould withdrew with illness, but is now be on holiday anyway.

Adam Garner played for Oxford Reserves on Wednesday. He suffered what appeared to be a minor back injury in the warm-up at Grays, but had more trouble 20-minutes before kick-off. He had physio treatment, but was unable to play. Because of the lateness of the withdrawal, we had to bring on a substitute before kick-off, in Alvin Bubb.

Matt Hayward unfortunately suffered concussion after his collision with the Grays keeper. I believe this was totally accidental however - the keeper tried to punch the ball clear, but unfortunately he caught Matt. After the game he was in a bad state, but I spoke to him today and he sounded much better, but cannot remember a thing that happened on Saturday! I'm not entirely sure when he'll be back yet. We badly missed him after he went off, as our defence had looked solid up to that point.

Danny Gordon returned from injury, and I would have liked to take him off before the end of the match. With events as they were though, he played the whole game. He seemed to be fit after the game, but reactions to inuries normally take a couple of days to show, but hopefully he'll be fine.

Alvin Bubb is another player I didn't want to play the entire game. Having just arrived back from Grenada he was thrust into the action, but I had to take him off as he was suffering from cramp having worked hard throughout the match.

I think Jack Rashid, Danny Gordon and Ryan Wiffin all deserve special praise for their performances on Saturday. Jack made a number of good stops in goal, and commanded his area well again. Danny showed himself to be a key defender for the team, especially with Garner and then Hayward absent. Ryan is definitely showing an improvement in his play as his confidence grows, and scored a great goal for his efforts.

Back to injuries, and unfortunately Rory Hunter's injury is more serious than first though and he could be out for 6-8 weeks. Kevin Davies is still about three weeks away, when he's fit there will be some interesting competition for the number one shirt!

I'm still on the lookout for new players, but at this stage of the season it's very difficult. I'd love to add more strikers to the squad to support Ryan Wiffin, but it's likely to be of more benefit to use any available money for next season."
