Biography

The greatest player to have played in Green & White, Cliff Hercules is a name synonomous with Aylesbury United Football Club, after he made 669 appearances, scoring 301 goals in the process, both club records, between 1984 and 2002.

Born in Aylesbury in August 1963 he progressed from the reserve team after signing from local side Oving. On the 22nd September 1984 Cliff made his first team debut, coming on as a substitute against Stourbridge. Just three days later and Cliff scored his first goal for the club, against Banbury United in the Bill Dellow Cup.

After several impressive substitute displays, manager Trevor Gould handed Cliff his first full start for the club on 27th October 1984, against Forest Green Rovers, and inevitably he bagged two goals. Cliff went on to score 20 goals in his first season, and help the club win promotion to the Southern League Premier Division.

In the 1986-87 season a heavy fixture schedule meant Cliff made 74 + 1 substitute appearances, and scored a total of 48 goals. This was the club's seasonal record, and another that is still in place today. Another 33 goals the following season secured the Premier Division Championship for the Ducks, and promotion to the Vauxhall Conference.

Cliff continued to score goals for the club, until in 1995 Slough Town offered him the chance of Conference Football once again. The temptation was too great to resist, and the big striker bid a tearful farewell in what fans thought was his last match in Green and White.

To the fans delight, Hercy returned two years later, but the Aylesbury faithful were in for a shock. During his time at Slough, Cliff was converted into a central defender, and his scoring antics were somewhat restricted. However, he managed to add another 8 goals to his tally, before retiring in May 2000, one goal short of the magical 300 mark.

On his retirement Cliff took up the roles of Football in the Community Officer and Reserve Team Manager, but was once more thrust into the limelight in October 2000 when he was appointed caretaker manager following the departure of Gary Phillips.

A month later he was confirmed as manager, and did a good job in steering the club away from relegation. Late in the season a spate of injuries forced Hercy to name himself as a substitute for a league match against Bedford. Playing for 10 minutes the entire Buckingham Road crowd desperately willed Cliff on to net his goal, but it didn't happen. Three days later though, and the long trip to Bognor Regis paid dividends for a handful of Ducks fans. Making his only start of the season, the veteran turned and volleyed the ball into the bottom corner, to score his 300th goal, in his 667th match.

Three days later and Hercy added what is now certainly his last goal, number 301 against Northwood. Cliff made his final appearance as a substitute in what turned out to be his final game as manager, away to Worthing in April 2002, having lead the Ducks back to the Ryman Premier Division.

Now running his own Football Coaching courses, Cliff is well away from the Aylesbury United limelight. But, as history has shown, he usually returns, and who knows what may happen in the future...
