United conceded 5 goals in an away league game for the first time since losing 7-1 at Kingstonian in August 1992 as they crashed to defeat at Top Field. It was a day to forget for players and supporters alike as many Ducks fans were caught in speed traps en route to the ground. Hitchin took the lead through Steve Conroy in the 34th minute and it was 2-0 in the 44th minute through Williams.

It was 3-0 in the 60th minute when McGonagle fired home against the run of play before United came closest to scoring 4 minutes later when Matt Hayward headed Steve Grenfell?s far post free kick onto a post. Bone made it 4-0 in the 74th minute and it was 5-0 just 4 minutes later with a penalty before Paul Benning (on his 100th Ducks appearance) scored a consolation in the 79th minute.
