After losing their opening league game 1-0 away at Dulwich Hamlet the previous Saturday, The Ducks bounced back to get their home campaign off to a winning start. Yeovil had been favourites to return to the Conference at the first attempt after relegation but they were taught a football lesson by Steve Ketteridge?s side who put in a stylish performance. United took the lead in the 17th minute when Steve Shea was brought down in the area by Chris White and Allan Pluckrose stepped up to slot home the resultant penalty. It was 2-0 on 47 minutes as Dean Williams? cross led to a goalmouth scramble and Naseem Bashir toe-poked home to give The Ducks some breathing space. However, the Somerset side pulled a goal back on 56 when Martin St Hilaire fired home a penalty after being brought down by United?s Paul Hobbs. There were some tense moments for The Ducks in the rest of the second half, including 2 strong shouts for a penalty in their favour being turned down. Any hopes Yeovil had of escaping Buckingham Road with a point were dashed in the 90th minute when Pluckrose crossed for Michael Danzey to dive in and head home for 3-1. |
