After recording their 3rd straight league win (and their 4th in all competitions) with a 4-1 home victory over Sutton United on the Saturday, United took their total unbeaten run in all competitions to 6 games as they continued their bid to retain the Guardian insurance League Cup with this 3rd Round win over ICIS League Premier Division rivals Carshalton Athletic at Buckingham Road.
The hosts got off to the perfect start in just the 4th minute when Gary Cobb's free kick found Naseem Bashir who headed past Robins keeper Les Cleevely. It was 2-0 in the 44th minute when when Michael Danzey took a pass from John Caeser in his stride and placed his shot past Cleevely. The visitors pulled one back through Paul Clarke in the 58th minute before disaster struck for The Ducks 5 minutes later when Steve Heard was sent off for a second yellow card for a foul, having just been booked for kicking the ball away. The visitors came back into it somewhat after that but Steve Ketteridge's side finally sealed their place in the quarter finals through Caesar in the 89th minute. David Figg |
