United travelled to Claremont Road after a promising start to their campaign, having lost just one of their opening eight league games and sitting in third position in the Premier Division.

Hendon had started the season poorly, failing to win in five, before three consecutive victories lifted them up to the middle of the table.

An injury to one of the linesmen led to a lengthy break before Hendon fired themselves into an apparently unassailable 3-0 half time lead.

Top scorer Paul Whitmarsh netted the first shortly after the enforced break before Tony Kelly doubled the lead. Whitmarsh added his second and his team's third and that looked to be that. United were completely out of sorts both on and off the pitch with the travelling faithful unusually subdued.

That all changed at the interval though and eight minutes into the second half the tricky Kieran Gallagher went on a jinking run and was upended in the box by Jon Daly. The diminutive Gary Crawshaw made no mistake from the penalty spot.

Buoyed by this and the vocal encouragement from the terraces United pressed forward. Eight minutes after the penalty Jason Soloman tried a speculative effort from twenty yards out which squirmed past Gary McCann and into the goal.

As the noise from the Clitterhouse rose in volume so did the level of performance on the pitch and it came as no surprise when a flying header from Corey Browne completed a remarkable comeback.
