At last the 1999/2000 season arrived and, with the new pitch looking immaculate, United began with a win. Alan Taylor gave first team debuts to four players: Des Gallagher, Wayne Stemp, Iain Duncan and Udo Onwere, whilst Jon Underwood became a fifth when replacing Warren Kelly who had to go off early in the second half. By then United were a goal up thanks to Corey Browne, who scored after 16 minutes from close range. In a game of few clear-cut chances, United edged both halves in terms of posession yet failed to convert their advantage with Browne and partner Gary Crawshaw not getting much of a look-in. In the second half Stuart Beevor and Onwere went close, and in the closing minutes Walton & Hersham's Craker almost snatched a point with a flying header which went just wide. |
