United bounced back well from their heartbreaking FA Cup defeat by Northampton to comfortably beat their mid table visitors from Surrey and regain top spot in the league. The hosts got off to a flyer with a goal in the 4th minute when Robins' defender Gary Richards' overhit back pass from the edge of the area flew past bemused keeper Tony Williams into the net. The visitors levelled in the 17th minute when Conrad Kane beat Steve Ketteridge and Junior Wilson on the left before drilling an angled shot across Ducks keeper Tim Garner and in off the far post for a stunning goal. United were back in front in the 25th minute when Allan Pluckrose curled the ball round the defence for Ketteridge to control before planting a low drive past Williams. It was 3-1 in the 76th minute when Steve Cox sent Ketteridge clear and he finished with a flourish past the advancing Williams. Three became four in the 80th minute when Ketteridge's lofted through ball found Pluckrose who was about to shoot when he was pushed in the area. Referee Graham Poll said penalty and Cox stepped up to fire home from the spot and get United's Christmas programme off to a winning start. |
