By the time of this return game with Bishop's Stortford, United's hopes of promotion were fading fast. Fourt place and ten points behind leaders Wokingham Town, Aylesbury's major problem had been their inability to cope with physical opposition and Stortford's persistence rattled the home side. Even after the visitors were reduced to ten men the Ducks couldn't get a grip on the game. Devon Gayle was given his marching orders for a punch in Peter Hutter's face that Lennox Lewis would have been proud of! Despite this United got off to a flying start when Glen Donegal's shot fell to the now fit again Cliff Hercules who shot home through a crowded area. The Ducks' lowest league crowd of the season (809) were then bored to tears until nine minutes before full time when Carl Zachhau scored his first goal for the club to increase the lead. The former Stortford man stole in unnoticed at the back post to finish from an acute angle. Even then United struggled to hold on and in the dying minutes Junior Wilson headed a corner into his own goal to reduce the deficit. |
