Keeper Simon Gregory, in for TIm Garner who was abroad on work commitments, was United's hero as he pulled off two saves in the closing minutes and ensured Aylesbury went into the First Round draw. In the 86th minute Graham Westley received a Carl Richards flick on and looked destined to score eight yards out, but Gregory managed to fling himself bravely to deflect the ball wide. Thirty seconds from the end, and with four minutes injury time played, a United attack was broken down and Paul Hobson spread a crossfield pass to John Bailey. He raced clear into the penalty area, but looked on in disbelief as Gregory came out and kept his nerve to deny the midfielder and give the Ducks a second chance with a replay. The home side had dominated the opening period, and very nearly took the lead after three minute. Carl Richards collected a Tommy Mason up and under, his 18 yard lob over Gregory hitting the top of the crossbar. Hobson summed up the game for Enfield on 22 minutes when, collecting a pass from Richards, he controlled and shot well wide from a good position. Soon afterwards Francis Cassidy, instead of 'giving it the big boot', tried to find Paul Benning inside his own area, allowing Hobson to nip in and volley just wide. Aylesbury's only chance of the half came after 34 minutes when Phil Heath played a one-two with Andy Robinson before nipping past two defenders and shoot, Peter Hucker getting down well to save. Three minutes later Cassidy chipped the ball over Graham Roberts to release Cliff Hercules in the clear, but Roberts raised his hand up to deliberately parry the ball. Many players would have been sent off, Mr Roberts though was lucky only to receive the yellow card. As the half ended Gregory saved a John Docker shot, this after a nice flowing move involved Westley, Hobson and Richards, then Benning's attempted backheader failed to find his keeper and the ball drifted inches past the post. Early in the second period Hercules headed just wide following a corner, and a first time twenty yarder from Cassidy flew over Hucker's bar. United's pressure continued, and in the 68th minute a John Lawford corner found Nick Ashby with a far post header, but with Hucker beaten, Bailey headed off the line. Bailey was in the thick of the action again on 78 minutes, hooking wide from six yards after a mix up between Heath and Benning. Three minutes later a deep free kick into the E's area was seized on first time by David Sansom with an angled drive, Hucker once more doing well to save. Enfield pressed forward in the closing stages, and United had Gregory to thank for those two superb stops to keep the score at 0-0. |
