After going a goal behind after one minute 30 seconds when Comerford set-up Witney, United hit back with three goals in a six minute spell. On 4 minutes a goalbound Jermaine Darlington shot was handled by defender Benstock and Gary Crawshaw converted the penalty. After 7 minutes Steve Butler drilled home from the edge of the box and two minutes later an identical Butler shot made it 3-1.

The lead should have been doubled, but a minute from the interval Quinton crossed for Cooper to make it 3-2. In the second half Mark Rooney headed against a post on 68 minutes, and three minutes later Crawshaw finished off a fine move to score his second goal of the game. In the closing ten minutes United keeper Richard Wilmot retained the two goal cushion with excellent saves from Cooper and Comerford.
