The Ducks were still looking for their first league point after this defeat by the big-spending visitors from Lincolnshire, who had splashed out a considerable sum during the close season.

Boston took the lead on 33 minutes when Glenn Beech crossed from the left and Chris Cook turned to fire past Tim Garner from 12 yards. It was 2-0 on the stroke of half time when Paul Shirtliff exchanged passes with Cook before firing a low shot past Garner from the edge of the box.

The Ducks pulled one back in the 75th minute when Adrian Mann crossed from the right for Cliff Hercules to head past Boston keeper John McKenna from 8 yards but try as they might Trevor Gould's side just could not manage an equaliser.
