By the time of this return match with Windsor & Eton, United's chances of regaining their Conference place at the first time of asking were looking slim. They lay seven points behind leaders Slough Town with two games in hand but only seven games to play. Having said that, only a few weeks earlier the Ducks promotion challenge appeared to be over already, but a run of eight wins and two draws had seen Trevor Gould's side re-emerge as title contenders. United started the game in emphatic style and took the lead on fourteen minutes. Allan Pluckrose's low whipped drive was only diverted into the path of Cliff Hercules who was left with the easy task of tapping home from two yards. From there on in it was downhill for the Ducks as the defence individually and collectively let their team mates down. Paul Waites ran right through the United back row before beating Tim Garner, and in injury time at the end of the first period Waites' ball beat Peter Hutter and Terry Merriman raced clear to chip home. Aylesbury had one opportunity to level in the second half, Glen Donegal's header crashing against the crossbar and the rebound being bundled away before Rob Smith could react, and United's title hopes were left in tatters. |
