After their recent good run, Aylesbury were brought back to reality by Bromsgrove Rovers, who showed exactly why they're challenging for the league title this season.

United couldn't have wished for a worse start than they had, conceding a goal with just a minute on the clock. Gary Hay, who recently turned down a move to Kidderminster Harriers, raced onto a long ball, shrugged off Daniel Mead and fired past Vincent to open the scoring. 1-0 Bromsgrove

A number of Bromsgrove's squad have played at a higher level, and their additional experience was paying dividends over the Ducks. One such player, Stuart Skidmore, had the next chance when he acrobatically fired wide.

This was probably only the second time Aylesbury have been genuinely outclassed in the league this season, and for much of the first half they just couldn't compete with their hosts.

Hay, awarded man of the match, was excellent up front, but at the back Rapinder Gill was a collosus - always in position to sweep up any danger, and comfortable enough on the ball to set his side on the attack again with his passing range.

Aylesbury had their first chance of the match after 17 minutes when a glancing header by Silvestri from Smyth's free-kick went over.

It was Hay who next went close for the home side, when he brilliantly beat his man by turning inside, but fired high and across away from the far post.

In similar fashion Hay had another chance just before the half hour mark, having been played through he beat his man but this time shot low, but again with the same result.

The final stages of the first half was Aylesbury's best spell of the game, and had they managed to convert one of their chances an interesting second half would have been in the offing.

Leon Gutzmore should have done better with a free-header which he sent well over from Smyth's free-kick delivery.

The Ducks then had a shot cleared off the line when Kavanagh rose highest at a corner kick, his header deflected back towards goal but was scrambled away by the man on the post who did his job.

Ben Stevens his a snapshot after a cross fell to him, but Danny Woodhall was alert enough to turn it wide for a corner kick.

Woodhall kept his side's lead intact on the stroke of half-time when he tipped over Mead's curling free-kick after a foul on the edge of the area by John Snape.

Half-time: Bromsgrove 1-0 Aylesbury

Aylesbury just hadn't been able to break through Bromsgrove's resolute defence, and despite a positive opening to the second half they never truly looked like getting on level terms again.

Instead, Rovers continued to search for their second goal. They might have had it when Hay crossed in from the right wing, but Skidmore could only head straight at Vincent when unmarked.

Nathan Lamey went close when he cut across the pitch with the ball and his fierce left footed effort was well held by Vincent.

United's resolve was broken just past the hour mark as Rovers secured the match by doubling their lead. Lamey broke free down the left and Vincent elected to race out of his goal only to be lobbed from 25-yards. The ball rebounded off the post, but Hay had followed up to roll into the empty net. 2-0 Bromsgrove

Rovers had the ball in the net again ten minutes later after a quickly taken free-kick caught Aylesbury cold and a melee ensued. Mr Day disallowed the effort though, adjudging Vincent to have been fouled in the confusion.

Vincent kept Lamey at bay again with a save from his driven free-kick, but Bromsgrove weren't to be denied a third. A Rovers forward somehow managed to shake off the attentions of three Aylesbury defenders and go for goal. Vincent produced a fantastic save but the ball was collected by Paul Lloyd who found enough space to squeeze a shot home. 3-0 Bromsgrove

Aylesbury finally produced a shot on goal inside the game's final five minutes. Substitue Luke Melisi levered the ball down into Butler's path and he fired a drive wide.

Some neat play on the left by Daniel Jones then saw him tee up Melisi who had a shot deflected which made it comfortable for Woodhall.

And so ended a bad afternoon for the Ducks. After their good recent form this has to prove something of a wake-up call so the team can get back on track next SUNDAY at home to Bishops Cleeve.
