Aylesbury moved up to 5th in the table with a 3-1 home win over 10-men of Broxbourne Borough.

In similar fashion to the season opening fixture between the sides at Goffs Lane, the Ducks had to recover from an early goal against them, but having done so it was a fairly comfortable win.

The cause was helped by the dismissal of Dean Williams early in the second half, but by then United had already turned the game around courtesy of two Joey Acheampong goals.

It was a case of ‘one in, one out’ in Aylesbury’s lineup, as Paul Edgeworth returned having been out with a broken nose, directly replacing Warren Garcia who missed out through injury.

The visitors took United by surprise with a strong start, and after a dangerous ball in from Anton Kostalas came to nothing in the fourth minute, they went ahead thirty seconds later when Anthony Stockman buried a low drive from long range. 1-0 Broxbourne

Just six minutes later Joey Acheampong made the most of a slip in the backline to get goal side of the defence and he took his goal like a player full of confidence, precisely rolling the ball into the bottom corner. 1-1

Borough had lost the services of defender Lee Bradshaw to injury, which may have accounted for their goal advantage being so short lived, but it could also be argued that a goal had been coming – Acheampong having already hit the post with a volley from Stacey Field’s ball in, and Sam Slatter going close with a dipping volley.

The game entered something of a lull following the equaliser, Broxbourne seeing a couple of threatening balls into the box come to nothing, whilst a swift break was ended just as quickly by an overly strong challenge from Tom Barnett who was duly cautioned for his indiscretion.

In the closing stages of the half John Mulholland tried his luck with a 40-yard drive which skimmed the crossbar, and a direct free-kick from Daniel Jones was comfortable enough for Ed Thompson in the visiting goal.

Two minutes from the interval Acheampong broke into the box, cut inside two defenders but saw his near post effort turned behind by Thompson, and from the resulting corner kick Jack Wood headed wide.

Williams then went close for Broxbourne when a fine, curled pass allowed him to get the wrong side of Wood but he could only cushion a volley over the bar.

Aylesbury made the best possible start to the second period with a goal just two minutes in. United’s in-form strikers combined as Field crossed for Acheampong, whose first attempt was headed straight at the keeper, but he was able to scramble in the rebound. 2-1 Aylesbury

Borough then pressed the self destruct button as Dean Williams talked his way off the pitch. Called over to be booked for dissent, he chose not to heed repeated warnings to silence his criticisms of the man in black, and was subsequently shown two yellow cards followed by a red.

Keen to prove the game wasn’t effectively over, Broxbourne then fashioned a good chance almost immediately when Stockman teed up Doyle on the edge of the box but he fired his shot wide of the target.

From that point visitors’ chances were limited and a third Aylesbury goal on the hour mark meant for a comfortable end to the game. Field latched on to Jones’ ball out of defence, and from 25-yards produced another memorable finish with a rocket into the top corner giving Thompson no hope. 3-1 Aylesbury

With half an hour still remaining, the Ducks had several chances to increase their lead, the first when Mulholland’s ball into the box fell to Paul Edgeworth who fired over.

Seconds later a flowing move saw Field roll in the on running Wood for a one-on-one but Thompson was able to save his low shot with his legs, winning a corner kick. Mulholland met the ball which was blocked and somehow didn’t cross the line as it rolled along the goal.

Edgeworth drilled a free-kick past the post and headed a Jones cross over the bar, whilst Field had a lashed shot blocked on the line by one of his own players as a fourth goal just wouldn’t come for United.

A moment of sloppiness nearly cost the Ducks on a rare Broxbourne attacking foray in the 85th minute, another fierce drive from Stockman drawing a fine save out of Sillitoe who beat the ball away at full stretch.

In the last minute Acheampong turned his way into the penalty area but his final shot was tame, and there was to be no hat-trick for the striker as time ran out on Aylesbury’s night.

Another very pleasing result and with further home games to come the Ducks now have every chance to pick up more points and make for a very good end to the season.
