After the highs of beating the ten men of Egham Town in midweek, roles were reversed for Aylesbury as they lost out at home to Godalming Town having been reduced to ten men themselves early in the second half.

Liam Smyth received a straight red card on 53 minutes for retaliation, but by that point the Ducks had already come from behind to lead 2-1, only for two goals in two minutes from in form striker Jack Mazzone winning the game for the visitors.

Aylesbury were without injured duo Lee Grace (ribs) and Stacey Field (ankle), meaning Jack Wood was thrust straight into a starting role having just returned to fitness himself, whilst Joey Acheampong came in up front in an otherwise unchanged lineup.

It was the Ducks who made the better start and Edgeworth hooked over in the opening seconds after his strike partner Acheampong had flicked on a throw in.

A piece of trickery and cross by Zack Reynolds just missed out Acheampong, and the ball wouldn’t quite come down quickly enough for Steve Hatch following a corner kick but he had a better chance two minutes later when Edgeworth levered down for the midfielder to lash over.

With United unable to build on their promising opening, the visitors began to come into the game for the first time with a Will Hutton long ranger watched all the way wide by Jack Sillitoe, and then a similar effort from the edge of the box which he failed to get hold of properly.

On 22 minutes the G’s did find a way through, with Hutton the provider as he played the ball through to Mazzone in plenty of space, and he produced a finish that was too hot for Sillitoe to keep out despite getting hands to the ball. 1-0 Godalming

Visiting goalkeeper Richard Ossai was having a fine first half, and as Aylesbury fought to draw level they found the stopper in fine form, as he superbly dealt with a fierce cross-shot drilled in by Jake Bewley, and confidently fielded a long shot from Edgeworth.

By contrast, Sillitoe was looking nervy and did just about enough in beating away a 34th minute cross shot as United were almost breached again.

Two minutes later and Ossai was called upon once more, Acheampong latching on to a loose ball and releasing Hatch in space whose rising shot was well saved by the former Scarborough man.

Before the break a free kick fell to Reynolds in the box but his effort was blocked, and after it was played back to Hatch he fired over, and as Aylesbury, unsuccessfully, looked to get on level terms Ossai was once again on top as he dealt with Acheampong’s effort.

Half-time: Aylesbury 0-1 Godalming

It took a matter of seconds after the second half restart for the Ducks to finally find a way through. Acheampong was clipped in the box by Musgrove, allowing Edgeworth to step up and score a penalty for the third game running – in uncompromising style with a high, hard spot kick. 1-1

Five minutes later the lively Jesse Waites then wrote his name onto the scoresheet, as Aylesbury completed the turnaround. Skipping in from the left, his low shot was turned behind by Ossai for a corner kick.

Waites’s set play was too long to threaten, but when it was crossed back in from the right Ossai was at last exposed as he flapped at the ball, where it dropped to Waites who waited for his moment before very deliberately placing his shot over the stranded keeper and into the net. 2-1 Aylesbury

Unfortunately, it all began to unravel for the Ducks two minutes later as Smyth was given his marching orders following a skirmish on the ground with Steve Brown.

Whilst not the sole factor for the defeat, it was certainly a contributing factor as Aylesbury faced the remaining 35 minutes with a man disadvantage.

Almost immediately Ben Baines came into midfield as a replacement for Paul Edgeworth, as, on the whole, United were doing a good job of coping with their visitors’ renewed spark – Mazzone drilling the ball over having waltzed into the box the closest they came in the aftermath.

The impressive youngster wasn’t to be denied though, and on 76 minutes the Hutton/Mazzone combination delivered again for the G’s. Hutton’s fierce strike was well saved by Sillitoe, and the former Woking striker was first to react and shoot home the loose ball. 2-2

Within two further minutes and Godalming had turned the game on its head again. Mazzone completed his hat-trick, taking his tally to six for the season already, when, after Jack Wood had been robbed in the box, he took the pass and finished clinically. 3-2 Godalming

Zack Reynolds, who had scored a treble of his own on Wednesday, came close to restoring parity when his free kick curled wide of the upright.

Tony Joyce threw on Lea Coulter and Shaun Owens for the closing minutes and although Aylesbury inflicted some spells of pressure, there was to be no comeback this time as the Surrey side held firm for the win.
